Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Sweep in Houston: What to Know First
HeatShield chimney sweep in Houston typically runs between $189 and $329 for a standard cleaning, and most jobs are completed the same day. That price includes a full visual check of your HeatShield liner system, creosote and soot removal, and a written report with photos of anything we find. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, not a factory dealer, which means we tell you the truth about what your liner needs without pushing a replacement you don’t have to buy.
If you own a home in Houston with a HeatShield liner installed in the last 10 to 15 years, this page is for you. We’ll walk through the specific things that go wrong with HeatShield systems in this climate, what a proper sweep actually involves, and what it should cost. Call (903) 961-6496 if you’d rather just talk to a person about your fireplace. The phone gets answered live, any hour.
How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
HeatShield makes a few different liner and repair products, and they don’t all fail the same way. Here’s what we actually see on Houston jobs:
- HeatShield Cerfractory flue sealant on older clay liners. This is the HeatShield product we see most often in Houston, and it’s usually applied over cracked clay tile. The problem: Houston’s humidity causes efflorescence (white mineral deposits) to push through the Cerfractory surface over time, especially in chimneys that run along exterior walls. The coating itself is sound, but the moisture behind it needs addressing. We sweep these chimneys carefully with poly brushes, never wire, because wire tears up the sealant surface. Then we check the chimney crown and cap, since that’s usually where the water is getting in.
- HeatShield CeCure joint repair on terracotta flues. CeCure is used to seal the joints between clay tiles. It works well until a chimney settles, which happens regularly in Houston’s clay soils (the Heights and Garden Oaks are especially prone to soil movement). When the tiles shift, the joint sealant cracks and pulls away. A routine sweep will often reveal flaking CeCure material in the firebox. We photograph it, show you, and tell you honestly whether it’s worth re-sealing or whether the tiles have shifted too far for the product to hold.
- HeatShield liner on original 1980s and 1990s chimneys with unlined smoke chambers. We run into HeatShield work that was done years ago where the smoke chamber was never parged or sealed. The HeatShield product gets blamed for failing when the real problem is that the smoke chamber lets creosote and moisture get behind the liner from the start. Our sweep includes a smoke chamber inspection for exactly this reason. If we find it unsealed, we tell you before we clean so you know what the camera is going to show.
- HeatShield Cerfractory on chimneys that vent gas appliances. Gas logs and gas water heaters produce acidic condensation inside a flue. Over time that acid attacks the Cerfractory surface, leaving it chalky and pitted. This is not a manufacturing defect, it’s a chemistry problem. We see it regularly on gas log setups near the Galleria and along the Energy Corridor. A sweep of a gas-vented chimney is mostly about removing acidic soot and checking for surface pitting. If the pitting is advanced, we’ll say so plainly and give you a repair range before you decide anything.
- HeatShield-applied repairs over previous patch jobs. We’ve swept chimneys where someone applied HeatShield product over an old refractory patch that was already failing, and the new coating started flaking within two years. HeatShield material bonds well to clean, prepared clay, but it doesn’t bond to a crumbling previous patch. During a sweep, we tap-test the flue surface in sections. If we hear hollow spots, that’s old patch material underneath. We’ll show you the video and explain whether the HeatShield needs to be stripped back and reapplied over properly prepped tile, or whether the repair can wait.
Styles & brands we work with

Our HeatShield Chimney Sweep Process
Every HeatShield job we do in Houston follows the same steps, and we explain each one before we start. That’s the system Nathan Corliss has worked under since the beginning: tell you the price first, explain the work second, put it in writing third. That’s the whole system.
- 1
You call, we answer. A live person takes your information, asks what kind of fireplace or appliance you have, and books a real arrival window, not a four-hour stretch. (903) 961-6496.
- 2
We arrive and price the job before touching anything. Your technician looks at the fireplace, the flue, the roof access, and quotes the sweep in writing. That number doesn’t change at the end.
- 3
Room protection goes down. Drop cloths around the hearth, floor runner from the door to the fireplace, and a HEPA vacuum running throughout. We leave the room cleaner than we found it, and that’s not a slogan, it’s a habit.
- 4
Mechanical sweep of the flue. For HeatShield-coated flues, we use poly brushes sized to the flue dimensions. Never wire, never scrapers. The goal is creosote and soot removal without abrading the sealant surface.
- 5
Camera inspection of the HeatShield surface. We run a camera the full length of the flue and look for pitting, flaking, separation at the joints, moisture intrusion, and efflorescence. You see the footage. You get a report with still images and plain-English notes.
- 6
Firebox, damper, and smoke chamber cleaning. We sweep the firebox, clean the damper assembly, and inspect the smoke chamber. We remove debris, creosote, and soot. We check the cap and crown from the roof, and if we find damage, we document it and give you a repair price separately. No surprise charges, no pressure.
At the end, we walk you through everything we found, answer your questions, and put the guarantee in writing. If a covered repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

AfterWhat HeatShield Chimney Sweep Costs in Houston
| Service | Typical Houston Range |
|---|---|
| Standard chimney sweep with HeatShield flue check | $189 – $289 |
| Sweep plus Level 1 camera inspection | $249 – $329 |
| Sweep plus Level 2 camera inspection (real estate, after chimney fire, system change) | $349 – $499 |
| Heavy creosote removal (Stage 2 or glazed) | $329 – $449 |
| Gas fireplace cleaning with HeatShield flue check | $159 – $249 |
What moves the price: flue height (two-story chimneys cost more to set up and sweep safely), creosote severity (glazed creosote takes longer and requires chemical treatment), roof pitch and access, and whether you want the Level 1 or Level 2 camera report. We tell you the price before we start, in writing, no exceptions. If the sweep reveals a HeatShield repair need, we quote that separately and give you time to think it over. Why Houston Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Houston for HeatShield Work
Most of our Houston customers have already been burned once. A technician who never showed. A price that doubled at the door. A liner repair that cracked again six weeks later. We hear that story regularly, so we built our company to be the opposite. Nathan Corliss, who owns Ashby Chimney Houston, has been working chimneys in this city for years, from older wood-burning fireplaces in the Heights to gas log setups closer to the Galleria. His crew shows up on time, quotes the price before touching a tool, and leaves the site cleaner than they found it.
We work on HeatShield systems every week, but we also carry and service DuraFlex and Gelco products. That matters because when a HeatShield liner is beyond repair, we tell you the truth about your replacement options instead of protecting a brand relationship we don’t have. Every job gets a written price first, a written guarantee at the end, and a free second visit if a covered repair fails. We answer the phone 24/7. That’s the Kingswell way: say the price, show up in the window, leave it cleaner, put the guarantee in writing, come back if it fails.
FAQs
No. A proper chimney sweep using the right brushes and methods does not void a HeatShield liner warranty. In fact, HeatShield’s own documentation calls for regular professional cleaning and inspection. We use poly brushes sized to your flue and never use wire or scraping tools on HeatShield-coated surfaces. Our sweep includes camera documentation, which also gives you a record for any future warranty claim.
You won’t know until someone looks with a camera. Visual symptoms like flaking material in the firebox, a dusty film on your mantel, or a smell that gets stronger on humid days all suggest something is happening, but the camera tells the truth. If the HeatShield surface is intact and the flue is just dirty, a sweep is all you need. If we find pitting, cracks, or separation, we show you the footage and give you a repair range. Nobody at Ashby recommends a repair you can’t see for yourself. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll set up the inspection.
Once a year if you burn wood, and every other year if you only use gas logs. Houston’s humidity means creosote doesn’t just build up, it absorbs moisture and gets sticky, which accelerates the formation of glazed creosote in flues that aren’t swept regularly. A gas log setup still produces residue, and those chimneys need checks too, just not as often. The annual sweep also gives you a dated record of the liner’s condition, which is worth keeping.
We can repair HeatShield systems in many cases. Small areas of wear or pitting can often be re-sealed with proper surface preparation, and joint separation can sometimes be re-sealed if the underlying tiles haven’t shifted too far. When a HeatShield liner has widespread failure or the flue structure itself is compromised, we’ll tell you replacement is the better call and give you options including DuraFlex and Gelco systems. We’re not beholden to any single manufacturer, so the recommendation fits your flue, not our inventory.
Most sweeps are booked within a week, and during the fall rush we usually run about the same. We don’t promise same-day service because we don’t want to rush a job that deserves care. If you’re scheduling before burning season, you’ll have no trouble getting on the calendar. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll get you a window that actually holds.
