DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex damper repair in Houston typically runs $280 to $640 installed, depending on whether the frame needs resizing or it’s a straight part swap, and we carry the common DuraFlex damper sizes on the truck so most jobs are done in a single visit. That’s the direct answer, and it’s what we’d tell you on the phone before scheduling anything.
The way most Houston homeowners find out their DuraFlex damper has failed is the smell. A damper that won’t seal lets hot attic air sink into the living room in summer, which is eight months of the year around here. Or they notice the handle has gone loose and sloppy, like stirring a spoon in gravel, because the cast frame has warped from years of heat cycling. We’ve pulled dampers out of chimneys in Meyerland and Bellaire where the blade had rusted through completely, leaving the owner paying to air-condition Piney Point humidity all August. If that’s the situation, the fix isn’t complicated; the problem is just finding a shop that knows DuraFlex parts, not generic fireplace hardware.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex is the aluminum liner system made by GSW (the parent line is Simpson Dura-Vent), and the dampers we match to it are the DuraFlex chimney-top dampers and the standard throat dampers paired with their liner kits. The compatibility gotcha that trips most people up: DuraFlex liners are oval profile, not perfectly round, so a round damper from another brand will gap at the sides and you’ll lose your seal completely. We measure the liner’s inner dimension with calipers before ordering or pulling a part off the truck, because there are two common inner diameters in Houston homes and they’re close enough that a guess is wrong about half the time.
On the parts identity question, DuraFlex stamps their model and size on the side of the frame, typically an M or MD prefix followed by a four-digit size code. If the stamp is burned away or hard to get at, we measure the pin-to-pin width at the frame where the blade seats. For the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision, we’re straightforward with customers about this: we stock OEM DuraFlex when the liner itself is still sound and the failure is isolated to the blade or pivot, and we use a quality aftermarket equivalent when the cost difference is significant and the fit is tested with the same caliper check. We don’t have a preference beyond what holds up in Houston’s specific weather, which we’ll get to.
Ashby Chimney Houston is an independent service provider; we’re not affiliated with DuraFlex or Simpson Dura-Vent. We work on their products because they’re common in this city and well made, but our warranty is our own and it’s in writing.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
If you’re reading this page, you’ve probably already got a sense something’s off. Here are the five symptoms we see most often on service calls, with the cause behind each:
- The handle has too much play or no resistance. This is almost always a worn pivot bushing or a blade that’s come off its pin. The damper blade is no longer seating flat against the frame, so the seal is compromised even if it looks closed from outside.
- You smell soot or old smoke inside the house, especially after rain. A damper that won’t close all the way is an open vertical column into your flue, and Houston rains put enough moisture down there that the odor gets carried back down into the room.
- Cold air drafts from the fireplace in winter, even with doors closed. Here’s the Houston-specific reality: our winters are mild but damp, and a leaky top or throat damper sends a steady stream of 50-degree damp air down the flue. You feel it as a chill and as a musty smell, sometimes both.
- Visible rust or corrosion on the blade or frame. Houston’s humidity plus a flue that carries wet marine air is a corrosion engine. A little surface rust is cosmetic, but pitting or flaking where the blade meets the frame means the metal is losing material and the seal will fail progressively.
- Pieces of the damper blade in the firebox. We see this most often in homes with older aluminum dampers. A partial blade fracture doesn’t necessarily mean a full replacement, but it does mean the damper won’t seal and the flue is no longer separating indoor air from the chimney column.
Any one of these is reason enough to call us at (903) 961-6496 before the next cold front rolls through, and most of them are caught in the first five minutes of a service call.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
You want numbers. Every DuraFlex damper repair we quote in Houston breaks down like this:
- Damper blade only, reused frame: $180 – $340 installed. This is the most common repair when we catch the failure early and the frame is still dimensionally stable.
- Full damper assembly (blade, frame, pivot hardware): $340 – $640 installed. Applies when rust or warping has compromised the frame, or the original installation was undersized.
- Full liner + damper replacement (if the liner is also end-of-life): quoted on-site after camera inspection. We don’t push this unless the camera shows liner failure; you’ll see the images yourself.
The range depends on liner diameter, whether we’re going through the firebox or from the top, and how much disassembly is required to get at the frame. Every quote is a written price before any work starts, and the number on the invoice matches the number we quoted at the door. The repair is covered by the Kingswell Guarantee; if the damper fails inside the guarantee period, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing, every job, no exceptions.
DIY or Call Us?
Damper repair is not in the high-danger category like gas lines or snake removal, but there are two honest cautions. First, the frame and blade sit inside a flue that may be holding creosote or have loose liner edges, and a slip with a tool inside that space can damage the liner. Second, the fitting is a precision job; the difference between sealing and not sealing is about a sixteenth of an inch on the frame opening, and if you’re guessing on the part size you’ll usually get it wrong.
What you can safely check yourself: the handle movement, visible rust, and whether the blade seats visibly flush when you close it. If any of those fail, that’s all the diagnostic you need. You don’t need to disassemble anything, and you definitely don’t need to buy a generic damper online and hope. Call us at (903) 961-6496 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth a service call or whether you can live with it for a season. Nathan Corliss would rather talk you out of a job than sell you one you don’t need; that’s how the company runs.
FAQs
We typically see 12 to 18 years out of a DuraFlex damper in Houston before the blade shows meaningful rust or wear, and the frame often outlasts the blade by several years. The humidity here shortens the lifespan compared to drier climates; a damper that would run 20-plus years in Phoenix is toast in 15 here if the flue isn’t dried out regularly. We stock DuraFlex repair parts on the truck, along with HeatShield and Gelco-branded materials for relining work, and we’ll tell you if your damper has five years left or has already failed. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll put a number on the repair right then.
Often it can be repaired: a worn pivot bushing or a blade that’s shifted on its pin is fixed in about 30 minutes by a tech who has the DuraFlex part on hand. The situations that require replacement are rust-through, frame warping from heat, or a blade fracture that’s lost more than a third of its original material. We’ll show you the failed part and explain which bucket yours falls into before we touch anything. Estimates are free, and the phone is answered by a live person.
Most damper repairs run 45 minutes to two hours, including the caliper measurement, part verification, and a smoke test to confirm the seal. If we’re doing a full assembly swap with liner work, that can run a half day. We book in a real arrival window and we keep it; call us at (903) 961-6496 for the next open slot.
We stock the two most common DuraFlex liner sizes and their matching damper blades and pivot hardware on the truck, which is why most repairs are done same-visit. If you have an oddball liner diameter or a discontinued series, we special-order the part and you’ll have a written quote before we order anything. Either way, you’ll know the price before the part is in our hands.
