Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Crown Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Copperfield crown repair in Houston typically runs between $450 and $1,200 installed, depending on the crown size, how much of the old mortar needs to come out, and whether we’re matching a factory crown or building one to fit your existing chase. We stock Copperfield-compatible crown components on our trucks, so most repairs are done in a single visit. You usually find out the crown has failed the hard way: a rust streak down the chase, water in the firebox, or a chimney cap that’s leaning because the mortar bed underneath gave up.

Here’s the short version. A crown is the concrete or mortar cap at the top of your chimney that sheds water away from the flue tiles and chase. On Copperfield chimneys, the crown is often a pre-cast concrete slab with a formed drip edge. When that drip edge cracks or the slab settles, water stops shedding and starts soaking in. In Houston, where we get 50-plus inches of rain a year and summer heat bakes the top of the chase, that cycle destroys crowns faster than almost anywhere else in the country. Nathan Corliss and our Houston crews see it every week: a crown that looked fine last spring is spalled and crumbling by August.

We’re an independent chimney company in Houston, not affiliated with Copperfield. What that means practically is we can tell you honestly whether a Copperfield factory part is worth the wait and the premium, or whether a quality aftermarket crown does the same job for less. More on that below.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield has shipped a lot of chimney configurations over the years, and the crown situation changes depending on what you have. The two big buckets are factory-built fireplace chases and masonry fireplaces with Copperfield-branded termination caps and chase pans.

On factory-built units, the crown is usually an integral part of the termination assembly. Copperfield’s older CF series and the later copper-topped chase covers use a formed metal crown or pan that sits on top of the wood chase. That pan is what rots out first in Houston humidity. If you have a masonry fireplace with a Copperfield cap, the crown is typically site-poured mortar over the top course of brick, and the Copperfield piece is the metal cap or spark arrestor that anchors into it.

Identification matters more than most people think. The model plate is usually on the inside of the fireplace opening, riveted to the firebox wall or the smoke shelf. Write down the model number and the serial prefix if you can. If the plate is gone or unreadable, our techs measure the chase opening and the flue inside diameter on site. A Copperfield 13-inch flue is not the same repair as an 8-inch, and the crown overhang spec differs. Getting the measurement wrong means ordering a crown that either overhangs the chase by two inches or falls inside it.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Copperfield factory crowns are fine if you’re still under a manufacturer’s warranty and can wait for the part. But we quote both paths honestly. A poured-in-place concrete crown with a proper drip edge and flexible crown coat will outlast a factory pre-cast slab in Houston weather most years, and it usually costs less. That’s not a knock on Copperfield. It’s a comment on what 95-degree August afternoons do to pre-cast concrete. We’ll show you the numbers for both and let you decide.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

The crown fails quietly at first, then loudly. Here are the five signs we see most often on Houston Copperfield chimneys, with what’s actually happening underneath each one:

  • Water in the firebox after a hard rain. The crown’s drip edge has lost its overhang or the crown coat has cracked through, so water runs down the flue or behind the chase instead of off the crown. You’ll see a puddle or a dark stain on the firebox floor.
  • Rust streaks down the side of the chase. This is the sheet metal chase pan failing, which is more common on Copperfield factory-built units than people realize. The pan rusts through, water gets into the chase cavity, and the rust runs down the siding.
  • A cap or spark arrestor that’s loose or leaning. The Copperfield cap anchors into the crown with bolts or set screws. When the mortar around those anchors spalls, the whole cap starts to shift. You can usually see it from the yard with binoculars.
  • Spalling or flaking concrete on the crown surface. That’s water that soaked in, froze or overheated, and popped the surface. In Houston we get fewer freeze-thaw cycles than up north, but the heat-expansion cycle does similar damage by August.
  • Efflorescence, the white chalky deposit on the brick or chase below the crown. Water is moving through the masonry and leaving mineral salts behind as it evaporates. It means the crown or the cap is letting water in somewhere above.

None of these are cosmetic. Every one of them is water doing something structural that gets more expensive the longer it runs.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most Copperfield crown repairs in Houston land between $450 and $1,200, installed. The range comes down to three things: crown size, condition of the chase or masonry underneath, and whether we’re matching a factory part or pouring and finishing on site. A small 13-by-13-inch factory-built termination crown that just needs a new coat and drip edge is on the low end. A masonry chimney with a cracked, settled slab that needs demolition, re-form, and pour is on the high end.

Every quote we write includes the parts, labor, removal of the old crown material, sealing, and a written guarantee on the work. We don’t do the thing where the price is for the crown only and then the sealing and the disposal show up as line items later. The price Nathan writes before he touches a tool is the price on the invoice. That’s the system.

Tell you the price first, explain the work second, put it in writing third. That’s the whole system.

The guarantee on a crown repair covers the work for a year. If the crown fails inside that window, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. No invoice, no “well, that’s a different repair,” no arguing about whether it’s covered.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can check without getting on a ladder: look at the cap with binoculars from the yard, check the firebox after rain, look for rust streaks on the chase. That helps you know whether you have a problem and how urgent it is.

But crown repair itself is not a DIY job, and that’s not us protecting our trade. It’s physics. The crown is at the top of your chimney, often 20 to 30 feet up, and the work means kneeling on a sloped roof, handling wet concrete, and working over an open flue. One slip is a life-altering injury. We see homeowners every year who got halfway through a “simple” crown patch and called us to finish it because the repair cracked within a month, or because they got up there and realized the roof pitch was steeper than it looked from the ground. The tools, the safety rigging, and the experience in matching crown material to Houston weather are the whole job. If your crown is cracked, spalling, or leaning, call us at (903) 961-6496. We’ll come out, measure, and give you the written price. If you decide not to do it that day, the quote’s still free.
