Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If your Olympia Chimney cap is rusted through, missing, or letting rain pour down your flue, we stock Olympia Chimney-compatible caps on the truck and install them throughout Houston, typically for $225 to $475 installed, depending on cap size, flue dimensions, and whether we need to fabricate a custom mounting bracket. Most jobs take under an hour once we’re on the roof. You’ll usually notice the problem one of three ways: water stains on the ceiling near the chimney, a rust-colored drip inside the firebox, or birds sounding way too close to your living room.
Here’s the part most Houston homeowners don’t realize: a failed chimney cap is not a cosmetic issue. It is the first line of defense for the entire flue system, and when it fails, the repair bill compounds fast. Rain gets in, mixes with creosote, turns acidic, and eats at the flue liner. Squirrels and starlings build nests that block the flue. And once a nest is in there, you’re not just replacing a cap. You’re paying for a full inspection plus removal of whatever critter moved in. Nathan Corliss has pulled raccoons, a surprising number of tennis balls, and one very angry squirrel out of Houston flues over the years. The cap is cheap insurance against all of it.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney builds caps across two main lines: the Vacu-Stack series (round, wind-driven draft stabilizers) and the standard mesh-top rain caps sold in both stainless steel and galvanized finishes. If your cap has a Vacu-Stack label, the sizing is stamped on the underside of the collar. If the label is gone, measure the flue tile inside diameter. That measurement, not the outside of the chimney, is what determines the right cap.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see every week in Houston: Olympia Chimney caps are sized to nominal flue tile dimensions, not actual inside measurements. A “13×13” flue tile can measure anywhere from 12.5 to 13.5 inches inside depending on age and clay batch. An off-the-shelf cap that fits the nominal number may sit loose or bind. We carry Olympia Chimney-compatible caps in all standard Houston sizes, plus adjustable mounting brackets for older homes where the flue tile has spalled or the crown is uneven. For unusual sizes, we fabricate a custom stainless cap that matches Olympia Chimney mounting geometry. OEM vs aftermarket: for most Houston homes, a quality stainless aftermarket cap with a full mesh spark arrestor performs identically to the Olympia Chimney-branded version, costs 20 to 30 percent less, and lasts the same 8 to 12 years in our climate.
One quick note on independence: Ashby Chimney Houston is an independent service company, not an Olympia Chimney dealer or affiliate. We stock compatible parts because they’re what we trust on the truck.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after heavy rain. The cap’s top lid has rusted through or blown off. In Houston, this usually shows up after a spring gully-washer. The water travels down the flue and pools in the firebox, often carrying fine black soot with it.
- Rust streaks down the chimney crown or siding. The cap’s galvanized base is corroding. Galvanized caps last 4 to 6 years in Houston’s humidity before the zinc coating fails. Once the base rusts, it expands and cracks the crown mortar around it.
- Bird noise, scratching, or nesting material in the flue. The mesh side screen has a hole, or the cap is missing entirely. Houston chimney swifts and starlings are aggressive nest builders in open flues. We removed a swift nest two seasons ago that filled a three-story flue completely.
- The cap rattles or leans. The mounting bracket has loosened from wind or the crown has cracked. A loose cap is a falling hazard and usually signals the crown needs patching during the same visit.
- Draft problems: smoke rolls into the room instead of up the flue. Partial blockage from a collapsed or bird-nested cap. If your Vacu-Stack has seized up, you lose the wind-driven draft assist entirely, which matters on Houston’s still, humid summer days when there’s no natural draw.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, installed Olympia Chimney chimney cap replacement runs $225 to $475. A basic stainless steel cap for a single-flue clay tile chimney lands around $225 to $300. A larger multi-flue cap or a Vacu-Stack replacement runs $325 to $475. If your flue is an unusual size, custom stainless fabrication adds roughly $75 to $125 to the total.
What’s included: the cap, the mounting hardware, and the labor to get on the roof and install it correctly, which means sealed against the flue tile and secured to the crown. We also include a visual check of the crown and top section of flue while we’re up there. Every job gets a written price before we start, and the installation is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap loosens, leaks, or fails inside the first year because of our installation, we come back and fix it at no charge. We use materials from chimney-trade suppliers including Olympia Chimney, DuraFlex, Gelco, and HeatShield, not whatever is rolling around the back of the van.
DIY or Call Us?
Honestly, a chimney cap replacement is not a job most Houston homeowners should do themselves. It involves ladder work, roof access, and often a pitch steep enough that the fall risk is real. We see the aftermath of weekend DIY attempts every fall: caps installed backwards, caps secured with deck screws into the flue tile, caps that blow off in the first storm. The roof is not the place to learn a new skill.
What you can safely do is look up from the ground with binoculars or take a photo with your phone on zoom. Check if the cap is still there, whether it’s leaning, and whether the mesh looks intact. That tells us a lot before we climb. If you want us to handle it, call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll get it done. Tell you the price first, explain the work second, put it in writing third, that’s the whole system.
FAQs
A stainless steel Olympia Chimney cap lasts 8 to 12 years in Houston’s climate; a galvanized cap lasts 4 to 6 years before the humidity and Gulf air corrode it. If your cap is older than that and showing rust or wobble, replacement is cheaper than waiting for a full failure. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll give you an honest read on whether it’s time.
Sometimes. A bent top lid can often be straightened, and a torn mesh section can be patched with stainless wire. But if the base is rusted through or the mounting bracket is cracked, repair is throwing good money after bad. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before we recommend anything.
Most single-cap replacements on an accessible Houston roof take 45 to 75 minutes from ladder up to cleanup. Multi-flue caps and custom brackets can add half an hour. We schedule by the job, not by some mysterious service window.
Yes. We carry Olympia Chimney-compatible stainless caps in the most common Houston flue sizes, plus adjustable brackets for odd-shaped older flues. If we need a size we don’t have, it’s sourced from our supplier network within a few days. No six-week backorder games.
