Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If your Gelco damper won’t open, won’t close, or rattles like a loose window screen every time the wind picks up, we can fix it. We stock Gelco-compatible replacement parts on the truck for most top-sealing and throat-mount dampers, and a full damper repair or swap in Houston typically runs $285 to $610 installed, parts and labor included. Most jobs are done in one visit, usually under two hours. The giveaway is usually obvious: a handle that spins without resistance, a cable that’s gone slack, or a damper plate that’s stuck open and letting Houston humidity pour down the flue all summer.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, but we work with their parts because they’re common in Houston homes and they hold up well when installed correctly. The problem is rarely the whole damper. It’s usually a worn linkage, a snapped cable, or a spring that’s given up. That’s what we fix most.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes two main damper styles we see across Houston: the top-sealing damper that mounts at the crown of the chimney, and the throat-mount damper that sits just above the firebox. The top-sealing models (the LYRE series and older TR-series) are the ones that fail most often here, and the culprit is usually UV degradation on the rubber gasket plus corrosion on the cable assembly from Houston’s humidity. Throat-mount units tend to wear at the hinge pins and the handle linkage instead.
To identify what you have, look at the top of your chimney if you can see it from the yard, or pull the damper handle and read the plate. Gelco stamps the model on the frame for most units made after 2005. If the stamp is gone, measure the flue opening. The LYRE top-seal dampers come in common sizes from 8×8 up to 13×18, and the mounting bracket width is what matters for a retro-fit or replacement part match.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Gelco’s factory replacement parts are well-made, but they’re not always in stock at local supply houses, and Houston isn’t a town where you want to wait two weeks for a part to ship while your air conditioning leaks out the chimney. We keep aftermarket equivalents from Duluth and Lock-Top on the truck for the common sizes because they interchange cleanly with Gelco frames. If your unit needs a genuine Gelco part specifically, we’ll tell you up front and tell you how long it’ll take. No guesswork.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins freely but nothing moves. This is almost always a snapped cable or a stripped gear in the handle assembly. The damper plate is stuck wherever it was when the cable let go, which means it could be wide open without you knowing it.
- You can hear wind whistling down the chimney when the fireplace isn’t in use. That’s a damper that won’t seal, either from a warped plate or a gasket that’s gone hard and cracked. In a Houston summer, that means cooled air running up the flue and your AC working harder than it should.
- The damper is stuck shut and the cable looks kinked or frayed. A kinked cable binds inside the conduit. Force the handle and you’ll snap it the rest of the way. This is the most common failure we find on Gelco units installed in the early 2010s.
- You smell a faint smoky odor even when the fire is out days later. A damper that doesn’t fully close lets chimney odors drift down, especially in Houston’s humidity, which carries creosote smell further than dry air does.
- Visible rust or pitting on the damper frame or hinge pins. We see more rust damage on dampers in Houston than we do in drier climates. Coastal humidity works on steel parts year-round, and once the hinge pins corrode, the plate stops seating flat.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge in Houston, in plain numbers.
- Cable replacement (common): $120 to $190, parts and labor
- Handle or linkage repair: $90 to $160
- Throat-mount damper replacement: $285 to $410 installed
- Top-sealing damper replacement (Gelco LYRE or equivalent): $440 to $610 installed
The range depends on flue size, roof access, and whether we’re swapping a part or the whole damper assembly. You get a written price before we touch a tool, and that’s the number on the invoice when we finish. Every damper repair we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails inside a year from our workmanship or the parts we installed, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing, every time.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things without getting on a ladder: note whether the handle moves freely or binds, look for a visible cable kink at the mount, and feel for air movement at the firebox when the damper is closed. That tells us a lot before we even arrive.
What we don’t recommend is pulling the damper yourself. Top-sealing dampers sit at the crown of the chimney, which means roof work, and the spring-loaded assemblies on Gelco units are under tension. A cable that lets go while you’re hand-tightening a bracket will crack you across the knuckles or worse. Throat dampers are less dangerous but easier to misalign, and a damper plate that doesn’t seat flat is the same as not having a damper at all. If you’re in Houston and you’ve got a Gelco damper acting up, call us at (903) 961-6496 and we’ll walk you through what we think it is before we even schedule the visit.
FAQs
A properly installed Gelco damper typically lasts 12 to 18 years in Houston, with cables and gaskets usually needing replacement at the 7- to 10-year mark. Humidity and salt air near the coast shorten the lifespan on the steel components. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll tell you what condition yours is in with a quick inspection.
Yes, most Gelco damper failures are repairable, especially cable, handle, and gasket issues. We only recommend full replacement when the frame itself is rusted through or the plate is warped beyond adjustment. If we can fix it for less, that’s what we’ll quote you.
Most Gelco damper repairs are done in 60 to 90 minutes, and full top-seal replacements usually run about two hours including roof access and cleanup. You’ll get a written time window before we arrive and a written price before work starts.
We stock common Gelco-compatible cables, handles, gaskets, and aftermarket equivalents on the truck for the sizes we see most in Houston, and we also keep parts for DuraFlex and HeatShield systems. If your unit needs a specific Gelco factory part we don’t have, we’ll tell you that up front with a real timeline.
