Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco chimney cap replacements across Houston, with most cap-plus-installation jobs running $285 – $520 depending on flue size, roof pitch, and whether the mounting bracket needs re-anchoring. If your Gelco cap is rusted through, missing its lid, or rattling in a Houston thunderstorm, we can usually get it swapped within a few days of your call. The way most Houston homeowners find out is the hard way: they hear metal scraping against the flue tile during a wind gust, or they spot rust streaks running down the chimney chase and realize the cap hasn’t been doing its job for a while. By the time water’s getting in, the cap has usually been failing silently for a season or two. That’s the pattern we see in neighborhoods like West University, Meyerland, and Kingwood: Gelco caps are solid products, but Houston’s humidity and salt-adjacent rainfall punish exposed galvanized steel faster than drier climates ever would.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco manufactures chimney caps under several product lines, but the ones we see on Houston homes most often are the Gelco Pro-Series and the Gelco standard single-flue caps with either expanded or perforated stainless mesh sides. The compatibility question that trips up most DIY buyers is this: your cap’s base dimension has to match the outside measurement of your flue tile, not the inside opening. A flue with an 8″×8″ interior opening often has a 10″×12″ outside dimension, and ordering the interior size gets you a cap that won’t seat. The second gotcha is mesh gauge. Gelco’s standard mesh is fine for keeping out leaves and birds, but Houston’s humidity and the fine soot from gas log fireplaces in homes near the Galleria mean you want the heavier-gauge stainless mesh option if it’s available for your flue size. Ashby Chimney Houston is an independent service company; we’re not affiliated with Gelco directly, but we’ve installed enough of their caps to keep a running inventory of the most common sizes on the truck and know which aftermarket equivalents hold up as well as the OEM part. For most homeowners, a genuine Gelco replacement is the right call if the existing cap lasted eight-plus years. If it failed in three, we’ll say so and suggest stepping up to a heavier-gauge option from another trade brand like Olympia or Copperfield rather than repeating the same mistake.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chase or crown. This is the tell. Gelco caps are galvanized or stainless depending on the series, and when the galvanizing breaks down in Houston’s humid air, the cap sacrifices itself before the flue does. Streaks mean the cap is corroding faster than it should and is on borrowed time.
- Water in the firebox after rain. A cap that’s still physically attached can fail invisibly: the mesh clogs with creosote or pollen, the hood’s seams open up, or the silicone at the mounting bracket degrades. Water then rides the flue walls straight down.
- Drafting problems indoors. A cap with clogged mesh or a rusted-through hood can restrict airflow enough that smoke backs into the living room on cold starts. We see this after long stretches of pollen season around the Heights, where live oaks coat screens in a matter of weeks.
- Metal-on-metal rattling during Houston storms. The mounting band has expansion bolts or set screws. When the silicone anchor points dry out and the bolts loosen, the cap shifts. You’ll hear it most at night when the wind picks up.
- Visible damage from animals. Raccoons in Houston will work a damaged cap edge or a lifting corner all night to get inside a flue. If you see claw marks or bent mesh corners, the cap’s been breached and needs replacement, not straightening.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Gelco cap in Houston, installed, expect to pay between $285 and $410. Larger caps, multi-flue configurations, or steep roof pitches around areas like Montrose’s older Victorians push the job toward $420 – $520. At Ashby Chimney Houston, the written price includes the cap itself, the new mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old cap, sealing the flue tile edge, and a written guarantee on the installation. We don’t charge a second “materials fee” or add surprise charges for roof access unless the roofline genuinely requires equipment beyond a standard ladder setup, and if it does, that’s in the written quote before we start. What drives the range is flue size, mesh gauge, and whether the existing mounting bracket is salvageable or has rusted solid and needs to be cut off. Nathan Corliss has done enough of these in Houston to quote most of them by phone from two or three photos and a flue measurement. Sometimes the old bracket is reusable and the job is quicker. Sometimes the bracket is so far gone you’d swear the cap was welded on. We quote worst-case and charge what the job actually takes when it’s easier, never the other way around. Tell you the price first, explain the work second, put it in writing third, that’s the whole system.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re reasonably comfortable on a ladder and your roof pitch is walkable, you can safely do the diagnostic part: take photos of the cap from the roofline, measure the outside flue tile dimensions, and check for play in the mounting band. That’s all “look, don’t touch” work and it’s genuinely useful when you call us for a quote. Where DIY goes sideways on Gelco caps is the install itself. Houston rooflines get slick with morning dew, and a careless step on a valley or a loose shingle puts you in a position no homeowner should be in. We’ve also seen DIY installs where the cap’s band was tightened hard enough to crack the flue tile lip, which turns a $300 cap job into a masonry repair. If you want to source the cap yourself and have us install it, we’re fine with that, though we may not warranty a part we didn’t supply. If you’d rather not go up there at all, call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll come look at it, show you photos of what we found, and quote the job in writing.
FAQs
A galvanized Gelco cap in Houston’s humidity typically lasts 6 – 9 years before visible corrosion sets in; their stainless-series caps can go 12 – 15 years if the mounting hardware is re-sealed at intervals. Homes east of downtown near the Ship Channel see slightly faster corrosion from airborne salt and industrial particulates. When we replace a cap, we note its age and install conditions so you’ll know when to start watching for rust instead of waiting for the streaks to show up on the brick. Call (903) 961-6496 for a cap inspection if you’re not sure where yours stands.
Sometimes, but not often enough to promise it. If the damage is isolated to a torn mesh corner or a single loosened mounting bolt, a repair can buy you a season or two. If the hood has rusted through, the galvanizing is bubbling, or the base skirt has separated from the body, replacement is the honest answer and we’ll show you the damage in photos before asking for a decision. We only recommend replacement when the cap can no longer do its actual job. Call us if you want a straight read on which one you’ve got.
For a standard single-flue install, it’s a 60 – 90 minute job from ladder setup to cleanup. The exception is when the old mounting bracket has rusted solid and needs to be cut off or when the roof pitch requires extra anchoring equipment. We leave the old cap and hardware with you or haul it away, whichever you prefer, and we take photos of the new install before we come down so nothing is left to the imagination.
We carry the most common Gelco sizes and base dimensions for Houston homes on the truck, including the sizes that fit the flue tiles in most post-1960s suburban construction. If your flue is an oddball dimension, we order it and you’ll typically have the cap installed within a week. We also stock equivalent caps from DuraFlex and HeatShield for owners who want a different mesh gauge or price point.
If your Gelco cap has failed or you’re not sure whether it has, call Ashby Chimney Houston at (903) 961-6496. We’ll answer live, schedule a real arrival window, and give you a written price before any work starts. If the cap needs replacing, you’ll see the photo evidence first and decide from there.
