Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement: The Houston Owner’s Guide
HeatShield flue liner replacement in Houston typically runs $2,800 to $6,500 installed, depending on the liner diameter, run length, and whether the old liner comes out cleanly or fights us on the way. We stock HeatShield-compatible ceramic and stainless liner components on our trucks, and most replacements are completed in a single day. Here’s the thing about HeatShield specifically: it’s a resurfacing system, not a standalone liner, so when it fails, what you’re actually replacing is the underlying flue liner it was applied to. Houston homeowners usually find out the hard way, during a routine sweep when our camera shows the HeatShield coating has delaminated, cracked, or started pulling away from the original clay tile.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield is manufactured by SaverSystems and sold as a ceramic coating applied to the inside of an existing chimney flue. There are two HeatShield products you’ll see referenced: HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant and HeatShield Joint Repair System. When owners call us saying they need a “HeatShield flue liner replacement,” they usually mean one of two things. Either the HeatShield coating itself has failed and needs to be ground out and replaced with a new liner system, or the HeatShield was installed as a patch over a clay tile liner that has since cracked again and now needs a full stainless steel reline. HeatShield does not make a standalone liner, so when the coating fails in a Houston flue that sees heavy humidity swings and high-heat fires in January, we’re typically pulling the old system and installing a properly sized stainless liner from DuraFlex or Gelco instead. If you have the HeatShield warranty paperwork, we can help determine if your failure is covered, but we’re not a HeatShield dealer and don’t process their claims.

Signs Your HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Flaking ceramic material in the firebox. When HeatShield delaminates, small chips of the ceramic coating fall down the flue and collect at the base of the fireplace. If you’re seeing gritty, sand-like debris that wasn’t there before, that’s the coating breaking down.
- Visible cracks in the coating during a camera inspection. This is the one that usually catches it. A Level 2 camera inspection shows hairline or spiderweb cracking in the HeatShield surface, often starting at the mortar joints where the original clay tiles meet.
- Smoke backing up into the room more than it used to. As the flue surface roughens and pieces break away, draft efficiency drops. Houston’s flat terrain already makes for weaker natural draft than hill country homes, so a degraded liner surface shows up faster here.
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney chase. A failed HeatShield coating lets moisture through to the original clay liner, and Houston’s rain season exposes that fast. Efflorescence on the exterior brick is another tell.
- An odor from the fireplace that gets stronger in humid weather. Houston humidity works into the flue and mixes with creosote trapped behind delaminated sections. It smells like a campfire gone sour, and it gets worse after rain.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most HeatShield flue liner replacements in Houston land between $2,800 and $6,500 installed. That includes removing the failed HeatShield material and the damaged clay tiles behind it, sizing and installing the new stainless liner, insulating the annular space where local code calls for it, and sealing the crown and chase cap. What drives the price is access: a one-story ranch in Cypress is easier than a three-story townhouse near Rice Village, and a 6-inch round liner costs less than an 8-inch oval. You also pay more when the old HeatShield needs mechanical grinding to remove, which is common with delaminated ceramic coating. We give every job a written price before any work starts, and that price includes the parts, labor, and our written guarantee. HeatShield replacements are not a “cheap bid” job, and if someone quotes you $900, the liner is undersized or they’re not insulating it.
DIY or Call Us?
This is not a DIY job. Flue liner replacement means working from the roofline, handling stainless steel sections that weigh more than you expect, and knowing how to size the liner to the appliance and the local code. You can safely do this: shine a flashlight up the flue from the firebox and look for obvious flaking or delamination, and keep an eye on the firebox floor for ceramic grit. What goes wrong when owners try this themselves is usually a liner that’s too small for the appliance, a top plate that leaks, or an uninsulated install that turns into a creosote trap. We’ve pulled three DIY liner installs out of Houston chimneys in the last two years, and all three had undersized liners. If you want to know what’s actually going on in your flue before you spend anything, call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll run a camera up there first.
Frequently Asked Questions
HeatShield coating applied over an intact clay liner in a properly drafted chimney can last 10 to 20 years in Houston, but high humidity and frequent freeze-thaw cycles at the crown shorten that. The bigger variable is the original clay liner underneath: HeatShield is only as good as the surface it’s bonded to.
Sometimes, yes, if the delamination is caught early and isolated to one or two joints. We can mechanically clean the failed section and reapply the HeatShield joint repair compound. But if the coating has failed across multiple tiles or the clay liner underneath is cracked, a full stainless reline is the repair that actually holds. Call us at (903) 961-6496 and we’ll tell you straight after a camera inspection.
Most HeatShield-to-stainless conversions in Houston are done in a single day, typically six to eight hours from setup to final sweep. Two-story homes with steep roofs or chases that need cricket work can run a second day. We’ll give you the timeline in writing before we start.
We stock HeatShield-compatible repair compounds and can source HeatShield materials directly from SaverSystems for spot repairs. For full liner replacements, we carry DuraFlex and Gelco stainless liner systems on our trucks so the job isn’t delayed waiting on freight. The right system depends on the appliance and the flue dimensions.
