Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide
When a HeatShield chimney crown starts spalling or cracking, Houston homeowners need to know two things: what it costs to repair, and whether the damage has spread to the flue or firebox below. Most HeatShield crown repairs in Houston run between $450 and $1,200 installed, depending on whether we’re sealing surface cracking with HeatShield caulk or rebuilding the crown entirely. We stock HeatShield crown coat and joint sealant on our trucks, so we can usually repair a HeatShield crown in a single visit.
Crown failure rarely announces itself. You’ll usually spot it during a heavy Houston rain, when water starts streaking down the fireplace face or pooling in the firebox. Or you’ll go up on the roof to clear leaves and see the crown looking like a cracked sidewalk. HeatShield’s product line is designed to seal crowns and stop water intrusion before it reaches the flue, but the crown itself takes a beating from Houston’s heat-and-humidity cycles. When that seal breaks, water gets into the chase and the damage starts compounding.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield makes two products that matter for crown repair: the Cease Fire joint sealant and the Crown Coat system. The joint sealant is what we use to fill hairline cracks and reseal the gap where the flue tile meets the crown. The Crown Coat is a heavier, elastomeric coating that goes over the entire crown surface when the concrete itself is starting to erode. Both are compatible with standard masonry crowns, and they’re what we stock on the truck for Houston calls.
The confusing part for homeowners is that “HeatShield” shows up in two different chimney contexts. There’s the brand name on the product (the sealant and coating), and there’s also the HeatShield name some manufacturers use for factory-built fireplace systems. If your fireplace is a prefab unit and you’ve got a HeatShield label on the firebox or chase, you may be dealing with a manufactured system with a metal chase top, not a masonry crown at all. That’s a different repair. The crown repair products we’re talking about here are for masonry chimneys with concrete or mortar crowns. If you’re not sure which one you have, send us a photo of the top of the chimney before we quote. We’d rather get the right product on the job the first time.
As for OEM versus aftermarket: HeatShield sealant and crown coat are already the aftermarket solution, in a sense. They’re not original equipment on any chimney. They’re a repair system designed to extend a crown’s life without a full tear-out. We use them because they work, and because they’re compatible with the DuraFlex and Gelco liner systems we also install when crown damage has already allowed water down the flue.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. In Houston, this is the number one sign a crown seal has failed. Water runs down the flue and lands in the firebox. It usually shows up as a rust-colored puddle or a damp patch on the fire brick a day or two after a storm.
- Efflorescence on the chimney exterior. That white, chalky residue on the brick or stone is salt being pulled out of the masonry by water. It means water is getting into the chimney structure at the top and moving through the brick. A failed crown is almost always the entry point.
- Crumbling mortar joints near the top of the chimney. When the crown stops shedding water, the mortar below it absorbs the moisture. In Houston’s freeze-thaw cycles (yes, we get them on the north side), that water expands and pops the mortar. We see this all the time in Spring and The Woodlands.
- Visible cracks in the crown itself. Hairline cracks are where it starts. If you can get eyes on the crown and see cracks wider than a nickel, the structural integrity is gone and the HeatShield seal, if there was one, has already separated from the concrete.
- Musty smell from the fireplace, especially in summer. Houston humidity does the rest. Once water has gotten into the flue and the chase, it sits there. In August, that means mold and mildew, and the smell pushes back into the living room through the damper.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote on HeatShield crown work in Houston, so you can plan around real numbers instead of surprises.
| Service | Typical Houston Price Range | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Crown crack sealing with HeatShield Cease Fire | $450 – $650 | Surface prep, crack filling, joint seal, written guarantee |
| Full crown coat with HeatShield Crown Coat | $650 – $900 | Crown cleaning, crack repair, two-coat Crown Coat application, written guarantee |
| Crown rebuild (poured concrete or mortar, then sealed) | $900 – $1,400 | Demolition of failed crown, form and pour, HeatShield crown coat finish, written guarantee |
The spread between low and high end depends on chimney height, roof pitch, and how much chasing we have to do to prepare the surface. A one-story chimney with easy ladder access in Katy is a different job from a steep-pitch roof near Memorial Park. Either way, the price we quote at the door is the price on the invoice. No add-ons after the fact. Nathan Corliss put that rule in place years ago, and it applies to every HeatShield repair we do in Houston.
Every HeatShield crown repair includes a written guarantee. If the crown coat fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge under the Kingswell Guarantee. That’s not a promise we make lightly. It’s a promise we put in writing on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely inspect the crown yourself. A ladder, a good look, and some photos will tell you if there are visible cracks or if the concrete is eroding. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a Houston roof in the summer with a bucket of sealant and a putty knife. Roof heat, humidity, and an unstable ladder are a bad combination. And the crown is the one surface on a chimney where a bad repair does more damage than no repair. If you seal over dirt, moisture, or failing concrete, the water just moves sideways into the brick and starts working on your flue. We’ve pulled apart DIY crown repairs in the Heights where the sealant looked fine on top and the brick underneath had turned to sponge.
HeatShield products are professional-grade for a reason. They need surface prep, the right ambient temperatures to cure, and an experienced hand to apply them so they actually last more than a season or two. If you’re on the fence, call us at (903) 961-6496. We’ll give you a straight answer about whether your crown needs attention now or can wait. Tell you the price first, explain the work second, put it in writing third – that’s the whole system.
Frequently Asked Questions
A properly applied HeatShield crown coat lasts 7 to 10 years in Houston’s climate, though the harshest exposure (south-facing chimneys with no shade) can shorten that to 5 or 6 years. The crown surface takes the most direct sun and rain of any part of the chimney. We factor that into our advice and tell you honestly if a rebuild will outlast a coating before we quote anything. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll assess what makes sense for your chimney.
Yes, if the cracks are hairline and the concrete is still structurally sound, a HeatShield crack fill and crown coat will seal it effectively. The line where repair stops being enough is when the concrete crumbles under light pressure or has separated in chunks. At that point you’re coating a failing surface, and the smart money goes to a rebuild. We’ll show you photos before we recommend anything.
Most HeatShield crown repairs in Houston are done in 3 to 4 hours. Crack sealing and crown coating are single-visit jobs. A full crown rebuild usually takes a full day, start to finish. The limiting factor is cure time on the coating, which means we need a dry window. Houston rain makes scheduling interesting, but we watch the forecast and book accordingly.
Yes. We keep HeatShield Cease Fire joint sealant and HeatShield Crown Coat on our trucks, along with DuraFlex and Gelco liner systems for when crown damage has already caused flue problems. If we arrive and find the damage is more extensive than the photos suggested, we usually have everything needed to finish the repair that same visit. If we don’t, we’ll tell you before we start and there’s no charge for the trip.
