Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a DuraFlex liner system and the cap on top has failed, here’s the short version: we stock DuraFlex-compatible caps and install them throughout Houston for $285 – $520 depending on cap type and roof access. Most jobs take under an hour once we’re on the roof. You’ll know the cap failed the morning you find water streaking down your fireplace wall after a storm, or when you hear birds chattering inside the flue at 6 a.m. Some owners spot it from the ground: the cap’s tilted, the mesh is ripped open, or it simply isn’t there anymore after a hard Houston wind.
Nathan Corliss and our crew have pulled caps off chimneys in the Heights, West University, and Kingwood that were original to houses built in the eighties: rusted through, mesh gone, seams split. A failed cap on a DuraFlex system isn’t a liner failure, but it becomes one if water sits in the flue for a season. That’s the part people don’t see coming.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes a few different cap families, and they are not all interchangeable. The main ones we run into on Houston homes are the Uni-Cap (round, fits both smooth-wall and corrugated liners), the Posi-Lock top kit that mates directly to DuraFlex’s locking system, and the universal multi-flue caps that handle odd roof pitches and chase-top installations. If your liner was installed with a DuraFlex Posi-Lock connector, you can’t just drop any round cap on top: the Posi-Lock uses a twist-on collar that a generic cap won’t seat against.
The quickest way to confirm what you have is to look at the cap itself, which usually has a DuraFlex stamp on the underside or on the mounting collar. If the stamp is gone, measure the inner diameter of the liner opening: most Houston homes with a single fireplace run either a 6-inch or 7-inch liner. Get that number wrong and the cap will rattle, leak, or refuse to seat at all.
We install genuine DuraFlex caps and quality aftermarket equivalents when they make sense. The honest difference is this: aftermarket caps from names like Gelco or Olympia Chimney often match or beat OEM on mesh density and stainless grade, and they run $30 – $60 less for the part itself. But if your system has a Posi-Lock collar or a DuraFlex chase cover already in place, we recommend staying with genuine DuraFlex. Mixing proprietary connectors with universal caps is where leaks start. Ashby Chimney Houston is an independent service provider; we’re not affiliated with DuraFlex, and that’s exactly why we’ll tell you when another brand’s cap fits better for less money.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust staining down the chimney chase or on the fireplace face. Galvanized caps rust through at the seams first. Water follows the liner down and carries that rust with it. If you see orange drip marks after rain, the cap is the likely source.
- Birds or squirrels in the flue. Mesh that’s torn or corroded becomes an open door. We pulled a squirrel nest out of a DuraFlex system in Spring Branch last fall; the cap’s mesh had rotted away and the owner had been hearing scratching for a month.
- Drafts or cold air pouring into the fireplace when it’s not in use. A cap with a bent or warped damper section can’t block wind. You’ll feel it standing near the hearth on a cold February evening in Houston.
- Water pooling at the base of the firebox after storms. A cap that’s tilted, cracked, or missing lets rainwater drive straight down the liner. In a Houston thunderstorm, that’s gallons, not drips. We see this most often after the spring storm season kicks up.
- The cap is visibly gone or hanging off the chimney. High winds from Gulf storms knock caps loose regularly. If you can see the cap dangling from the ground, you don’t need an inspection to know it failed; you need it replaced before the next rain.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included in Houston
An installed DuraFlex-compatible chimney cap replacement in Houston runs between $285 and $520. That’s parts and labor, written down before we touch the roof.
Where you land inside that range depends on three things: the cap type (a standard single-flue stainless cap is the low end; a multi-flue or custom-sized chase cover runs higher), roof pitch and access (a steep tile roof in Memorial costs more to work on safely than a shallow shingle roof in Cypress), and whether the existing mounting collar needs replacement. A corroded collar means we replace it while we’re up there, and that adds $40 – $70 in parts.
Every cap replacement includes removal of the old cap, inspection of the liner’s top edge, installation of the new cap with sealed fasteners, and a photo report so you see what we saw before we came down off the roof. The written guarantee covers the installation; if the cap loosens or leaks because of our work inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
If you can safely see your chimney from the ground or a ladder, you can check the cap yourself: look for tilt, missing mesh, rust, or daylight through seams. That’s worth doing before you call, because it helps us know what to put on the truck.
But the swap itself is roof work. On a two-story Houston house with a 10/12 pitch, that’s not a place to learn on the job. Even on a one-story ranch, hauling tools up a ladder while handling a stainless cap that wants to catch every gust of wind is a good way to damage the liner’s top edge or, worse, lose your balance. We see homeowner attempts that ended with a cracked crown because the cap was forced onto a liner it didn’t fit.
If you’re comfortable on your roof and know your liner diameter, a cap replacement is a real option for a careful DIYer. If any part of that sentence made you hesitate, call us at (903) 961-6496 and we’ll handle it. Written price first. No surprises at the door.
FAQs
A quality stainless cap on a Houston chimney lasts 8 – 15 years, but galvanized caps fail in 3 – 6 years because our humidity and Gulf storm salt work through them quickly. The mesh usually fails before the lid.
Small bends can be straightened and mesh sections can sometimes be patched, but in our experience a rust-through or a torn mesh is the cap telling you it’s done. For the difference in cost between repair labor and a new cap that carries a guarantee, replacement almost always wins. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll tell you straight whether yours has anything left in it.
Most DuraFlex cap replacements take 45 – 75 minutes once we’re on the roof. If the mounting collar is corroded or the crown needs minor sealing, figure another 30 minutes and we’ll quote that before we start.
We stock common 6-inch and 7-inch single-flue caps, including DuraFlex-compatible and quality equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney. Multi-flue and custom chase caps usually require a 3 – 5 day order. Tell us your liner measurement when you call and we’ll tell you exactly what’s on the truck.
