Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Sweep in Houston: What to Know First
We’re an independent DuraFlex service provider in Houston, and we sweep and service DuraFlex-lined chimneys every week. A standard DuraFlex chimney sweep in Houston runs between $189 and $329 depending on flue height, creosote buildup, and whether we’re also pulling the cap for a Level 2 inspection. Most jobs are done in one visit, usually 60 to 90 minutes, and you’ll have a written price before we touch a tool.
This page is for Houston homeowners who own a fireplace or stove vented through a DuraFlex liner and want to know what a proper sweep involves, what can go wrong with these specific liners, and what it honestly costs. If you’d rather just talk it through, call us at (903) 961-6496 and a live person answers, day or night.
How DuraFlex Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
DuraFlex builds a solid liner. We’ve installed and serviced enough of them to know exactly where they show wear in Houston’s climate, and it’s rarely where the manufacturer’s literature points. Here’s what we actually find on the job:
- Creosote glazing on the inner corrugations. DuraFlex’s 316L stainless liners, especially the DuraFlex 316 series, have a spiral corrugation that flexes for easy install. That same corrugation catches creosote faster than a smooth-wall rigid liner would. On wood-burning fireplaces in older Houston homes, like those around Garden Oaks or Timbergrove, we regularly see stage-two creosote stuck in those grooves after a single season. The fix is a mechanical sweep with a poly brush sized to the liner’s true inner diameter, followed by a camera check to confirm the grooves are clean. A flat-wire brush will scratch the liner’s inner wall and void parts of the DuraFlex warranty, so we don’t use them on these jobs.
- Galvanic corrosion at the rain cap connection. Houston’s humidity and salt air from the Gulf create a perfect environment for corrosion where the liner meets the cap, especially on the DuraFlex Pro line when a non-DuraFlex cap or a mixed-metal screw was used during original install. We see pitting and rust at that joint within five to seven years. We remove the old cap, wire-brush the connection, and replace with the correct DuraFlex cap or a proper 316L aftermarket match using the right fasteners. Leaving it only gets louder leaks and eventual liner damage at the top.
- Ovalization from the original install. DuraFlex’s flexibility is a selling point, but we’ve pulled enough liners to know that a liner forced through an offset flue in an older Houston chimney, common in bungalows in the Heights, can stay compressed at the bend. That oval shape means an off-the-shelf round brush doesn’t contact the full wall, and creosote builds in the flats. We measure the liner with a laser before choosing the brush. If it’s badly deformed, we tell you straight whether a sweep will do it or whether the liner needs replacement, rather than pretending a sweep fixed what it can’t reach.
- Soot packing behind the tee at the appliance connection. On gas log setups in Houston homes near the Galleria area, we find soot accumulating behind the tee where the liner connects to the appliance flue collar. This is less visible than creosote but restricts draft and pushes carbon monoxide back into the room. We remove the appliance connector during the sweep, clean the tee and connector, and reseal with high-temp silicone. Most Houston sweep companies skip this step because it takes an extra twenty minutes. We don’t skip it.
- Warranty-voiding prior repairs. This is the one that makes us shake our heads. A previous company used furnace cement or non-UL-listed patch material inside a DuraFlex liner to “fix” a small gap, which voids the liner’s warranty and creates a fire risk. DuraFlex’s warranty explicitly covers material and manufacturing defects, not damage from improper cleaning or unapproved repair materials. If we find this, we document it with the camera, explain what’s actually warranty-valid, and give you the straight answer on repair versus replacement. You’ll see the footage yourself before any recommendations are made.

Our DuraFlex Chimney Sweep Process
Here’s how a DuraFlex sweep goes at Ashby Chimney Houston, from the first call to the final walkthrough:
- 1
You call, we answer. A live person takes your call at (903) 961-6496, asks about your fireplace or stove, and books a real arrival window, not a four-hour guess.
- 2
We show up and quote first. Nathan Corliss or one of the crew walks the job, checks the liner access, and gives you a written price before any work starts. The number on the invoice matches that quote. No add-ons discovered mid-job.
- 3
We sweep with the right tools. For DuraFlex liners, that means a poly brush sized to your liner’s actual measured diameter, used from the top down, with drop cloths and a HEPA vacuum running at the fireplace opening. No mess, no scratches to the liner wall.
- 4
We inspect as we go. After the sweep, we run a camera through the full length of the flue. You’ll see the before and after footage yourself. If we find cracks, ovalization, or corrosion, we show you and explain what’s actually urgent and what can wait.
- 5
We leave it cleaner than we found it. We reseal the appliance connection, reset the cap, and clean every surface we touched. The fireplace looks like we were never there, except the flue is actually clean.
- 6
You get the written guarantee. Every sweep and repair is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something’s not right, we come back and make it right, at no charge. You’ll hold that in writing before we leave the driveway.

AfterWhat DuraFlex Chimney Sweep Costs in Houston
Straight numbers, because we put the price first. A basic DuraFlex chimney sweep in Houston runs $189 to $249 for a single-story home with standard buildup. A two-story home or one with heavier creosote runs $249 to $329. If we’re adding a Level 2 camera inspection at the same visit, it’s $99 more, and we recommend it about every other year on wood-burning systems.
What moves the price: flue height, degree of creosote glazing, whether the cap is seized and needs replacement, and whether we’re pulling the appliance connector for a gas setup. We’ll give you the exact number in writing before we start. Call (903) 961-6496 for a free estimate. No pressure, no surprise charges, no mystery fees at the door.
Why Houston Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Houston for DuraFlex Work
We’ve been at this since 2002, and Nathan Corliss has been working Houston chimneys long enough to know which creosote pattern means oak from a Heights fireplace and which means pine from a west Houston fire pit. But the reason people call us isn’t the years. It’s the guarantee. Every job gets a written price before work starts and a written guarantee when it’s done. If a repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and we put it in writing every single time.
Our techs are background-checked and uniformed, so you know exactly who’s walking through your door. And if your DuraFlex liner needs a repair that calls for a different product, we work with HeatShield and Gelco systems as well, so we’re not forcing a one-brand answer on a problem that needs something else. Tell you the price first, explain the work second, put it in writing third, that’s the whole system.
FAQs
No. A professional sweep using the correct tools and methods is required maintenance and does not void a DuraFlex warranty. What does void it is using a flat-wire brush that scratches the liner wall, applying unapproved patch materials, or running a fire hot enough to warp the stainless. We use poly brushes and follow DuraFlex’s cleaning guidelines, and we document every sweep with camera footage so you have a record if a warranty claim ever comes up.
Once a year if you burn wood regularly, which in Houston typically means November through February. If you use the fireplace only occasionally or run a gas log set, every two years is usually sufficient. The humidity here doesn’t reduce creosote, it actually makes it stick harder, so annual sweeps are the smart default.
Yes, and we’ll show you the proof. After every sweep we run a camera through the flue and we look for the specific failure signs: cracked welds at the seam, pinhole corrosion through the wall, severe ovalization, or gaps at the tee connection. If we find something that means replacement, you’ll see it on the screen before we make any recommendation. If the liner just needs a sweep, we say so and that’s the end of it.
Both, and we’ll tell you which is which and why. For caps, connectors, and tee assemblies, we prefer genuine DuraFlex parts when they’re available, because the fit is guaranteed and the warranty stays clean. For fasteners and sealants, we use professional-grade equivalents that meet or exceed the OEM spec, because that’s the right material for the job. We don’t use whatever’s rolling around in the van.
Usually within three to five business days, and we always give you a real arrival window when you book. If you’re dealing with a draft issue or a smell, we prioritize those calls and do our best to get there sooner. Call (903) 961-6496 and we’ll get you on the schedule with a straight answer, not a callback form.
